Once, when he was asked a question about the idea, meaning of one of his novels, J.M.Coetzee answered:

"I would not wish to deny you your reading."

How wonderful and clever I find this.
Why do we always want to know all aspects of the intention or the way the story is told.
There would be nothing left for the reader to discover and experience in and from his/hers own reading.

How lovely and clear Mr. Coetzee. Thank you.

I read this a couple of years ago. I'd never read any of J.M.Coetzees previous works but the cover looked intriguing, yes I'm that shallow. It was a truly wonderful read. There is great tension in the book, both between the charactes in it and the situations that arise. A great book.
